How appropriate that my Jewish mother sent me this. I thought it was hilarious & timely, since I’m coming to terms with certain issues related to the theme of kvetching.

I checked out her son’s article in HuffPost, Frame It With Gratitude:

“One way to describe your experience would be to say, ‘This is so annoying I could scream!’ Or you could say, ‘This is so annoying … and my life is really very blessed.’ ” She agreed that could make a big difference.

“But I don’t think I can remember to do that,” she sighed.

To my delight and amazement, my mother has continued doing the practice, and the change has been revolutionary. Seven months after my visit, she sent a card for my birthday. As is our family tradition, it contained a poem she wrote for the occasion. This one I especially cherish. Even though she started losing her sight during those months, the effects of her gratitude practice are evident in this poignant excerpt. And it goes to show you that you can teach an elder human new tricks!

Ninety is just fine with me, I no longer rant and rave
About where the world is heading and my exclusive job to save.
I wallow in contentment and know that I am blessed
Awakening to the joy of living at its best.
I’m happier than I’ve ever been and truly mean each word.
The thoughts that caused the worries now all seem so absurd.
Though my eyesight has been dimmed I see clearer than before,
The glass is not half empty, it’s overflowing to be sure.

Why is it that we have to complain or criticize about what’s there? Even if you want to improve something, surely there are more effective ways of going about it.

This is a guest post from Clare Dakin, UK coordinator for Project GreenHands. It’s her sharing about the Linga Bhairavi consecration. Thanks for letting me share this beautifully touching post!

I am writing from the Ashram in India, in an attempt to describe what I have just lived through…which is the birth of a Fire Goddess; a miracle of such significance, that part of me is still unable to comprehend or get my head around it.

The incarnation of the Divine Feminine into her own temple, here next to Shiva in the form of the Dhyanalinga in his own temple, gives us a place of embodied union between masculine and feminine that is sacred in a way that I know I simply will not be able to find words for.

There really is no way for those of us who do not have access to other dimensions as the norm, to understand what is possible at the fundamental level of creation, by a Yogi who experiences everything as a part of himself, who solidifies mercury with his bare hands and sits there moulding it as if it was clay before locking energies into it at a level of power that will throw you on the ground or blast you heart open into utter spiritual devotion for the mystery of life. This man literally crafted a feminine force out of creation itself, “a woman with the man taken out”, a being who would balance the silence and awareness stimulating power of the masculine Dhyanalinga with all the fire, chaos, beauty, compassion and wild raving ecstasy of the unbridled feminine. ‘His’ is the awareness, ‘Hers’ is the humanity. I don’t think I would ever have believed such a thing was even possible had I not participated and literally felt her birthed into creation.

Sadhguru said that we would all be playing the role of midwife if we sat with enough intensity and devotion. 5000 of us (350 Europeans the rest Indian) chanting and meditating, calling her, accessing wild energies to add our combined force to the matter in Sadhguru’s hands, all relayed to us from inside the Temple by multiple big screens. Hours of hard graft…just like being a midwife, over 3 days, late into every night with maximum 3 hours sleep and then back into the devotional process. I wish I could take what I have seen and what is in my heart and somehow place it in yours so that you could feel what I am feeling.

She, like Shiva in Dhyanalinga has her energies held in a mercury core that is behind her statue, although Sadhguru has energized the rock in such a way that its energy will never dissipate, unless, amazingly, she is not treated properly, or if a man tries to take over the temple, and then she will leave in a rage that he says you do not want to be anywhere close to! This is a women’s temple, to be tended only by women, but open to everyone. The only one of its kind, ever.

You have never seen a female deity so worshiped, so bowed down to, so blessed…Sadhguru wept as he brought her into reality and then sang chants to her in a voice so filled with love and devotion it was like hearing an archetypal love song from behind the veil of time, the same song that lives hidden in the very core of our own hearts…and then it was as if the night sky just fell into our laps and became profoundly alive. Immensity just landed, throbbing, and there she was. I am in tears again just writing this. How privileged am I, are we for being part of something of this nature, to have moved it through our bodies, lived through that intensity. There she is, in her own temple, tended by beautiful women, her priestesses, who have rituals for every stage of life; colourful, vivid and very real and beautiful rituals full of dance and fire and song, so so different from the austerity of Dhyanalinga.

For myself, as someone who has done a fairly convincing job of embodying the archetype of the wounded feminine, it was a new world to be faced with levels of devotion towards the feminine that placed her back into her rightful position, especially here where women are so subjugated…but for the whole world to have such a mighty charged feminine energy being worshiped and honoured with levels of reverence, carved out the grief in so many of us all and replaced it with permission to value within ourselves, what has felt so battered and unsafe for so long; the Goddess within…true feminine power, unashamed, uncensored. My body didn’t know what to do other than sob for hours, as if emptying out the old story and pain to make way for a new infusion of beautiful feminine energy.

I woke yesterday with a heart so carved out and expanded, it felt as if it filled my entire upper body. Everything I looked at broke me open. I have learnt to bow down to the mystery of life through my time with Sadhguru, but now that mystery just got filled with glorious music, flowers, fire and dance, wrapped herself around my being and called herself Mother.

Sponsoring a student represents a unique opportunity to dramatically touch the life of a child. Through the Isha Vidhya scholarship program, each sponsor is matched with a student / students and receives updates on the student’s progress, as well as letters and photos. Sponsors can also write back and even visit their student(s) at the school. Over the years, sponsors can become involved in the life of their student(s) and watch as the children grows and blossoms. To find out more about sponsoring a child, please visit http://www.ishavidhya.org/scholarships

Two new Isha Vidhya fundraising initiatives have recently been launched. The annual Mumbai Marathon, to be held 18 January, presents an opportunity for people from across India and the world to come together in support of social change. This year, 125 dedicated Isha volunteers have signed up to run or walk in support of Isha Vidhya. There’s still time to pledge your support! Visit http://www.ishavidhya.org/marathon/ to find out more about the runners, the event, and to see how you can get involved.

Sadhguru recently offered a special opportunity for everyone, from all walks of life, from all corners of the earth, to make a profound difference in the life of another. The Skip-a-Meal program is an invitation for those having three or more meals a day to skip one meal each Wednesday and make a monthly contribution of the amount saved to the Isha Vidhya project. Whatever you would spend on your meal can help change the fate of a rural child. Beyond just the financial donation, skipping a meal each week gives an opportunity to feel a small amount of the hunger that so many millions of children daily experience. The amount saved for one meal a week may seem like a small contribution, but when thousands join together, we can create a huge impact in making quality education available in rural India. To join this initiative, please visit http://www.ishafoundation.org/skip-a-meal.

The TOI has an interesting response to Sarah Palin’s nomination: the examination of political tokenism of women in India.

“A patriarchal ethos dominates both the societies, American and Indian, but they operate in different ways. In India, despite the patriarchal ethos, powerful women leaders have emerged,” says political scientist Imtiaz Ahmed.

The most famous examples are BSP chief Mayawati and AIADMK head Jayalalitha. Both emerged from the shadow of iconic godfathers, to establish themselves as leaders with grassroots support.

It is not enough to be someone’s wife, sister or mistress in Indian politics. Neerja Gopal Jayal, professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s centre of law and governance points out that “Even at the panchayat level, we have had women from the member families being nominated. But the first time, patronage may work but not the second time. And this is true at the national level too.”

I myself have often wondered how, especially in the super-conservative state of Rajasthan, female leaders have established themselves. (See today’s article about Sonia Gandhi criticizing “the corrupt and inefficient [Vasundhara Raje] government.”)

Ranjana Kumari, director of the Centre for Social Research says, “What is unique to India, is the fact that women have the space to grow as leaders. Maybe, it has to do with our cultural ethos, where women are worshipped as goddesses.’’

I’m not so sure about the goddess worship argument, considering the low status of the majority of women; I think it could be more likely the ethos of ‘Mother India’ and the self-sacrificing stereotype of mothers/women.

The Washington Post had an in-depth piece on Indian women’s status. It starts off discussing ‘eve-teasing’, i.e. harrassment, but then delves into the whole range of issues from dowry to sex-selective abortion:

The Washington Post had an in-depth piece on Indian women’s status. It starts off discussing ‘eve-teasing’, i.e. harrassment, but then delves into the whole range of issues from dowry to sex-selective abortion:

For India’s middle-class urban women, the past decade has brought unprecedented opportunities to advance in a social order long dominated by men. But a powerful male backlash has accompanied the women’s revolution, an upwelling of resentment that has expressed itself in sexual violence and harassment.

At the same time, however, the number of reported instances of domestic violence, rape and dowry killings is spiking in South Asian cities, according to women’s groups, demographers and sociologists.

Violence against women is the fastest-growing crime in India, a recent study concluded. Every 26 minutes a woman is molested, every 34 minutes a rape takes place, and every 43 minutes a woman is kidnapped, according to the Home Ministry’s National Crime Records Bureau.

Novellist and commentator Shobhaa De is quoted as saying:

“The latest statistics are terrifying. And it clearly points to male rage. Underneath our incredible social change, the Indian male is experiencing nothing short of a psychological frenzy.”

The article highlights the Smile Foundation for its attempts to address the issues through “self-respect and self-esteem sessions” and street theater.

It’s worth noting that while India ranks fifth highest in reported rapes, the United States ranks highest in the world. Yet I don’t think an article discussing gender dynamics in the US is likely to be covered by the WashPo in a similar manner.
