SEWA has just launched a line of eco-friendly clothing to be sold internationally. (Don’t understand the 2007 on the photo, I guess the promotional photos pre-dated the launch!) The high-end brand, Hansiba, uses designs which combine western and ethnic Gujarati influences. SEWA plans to market the line first in Mexico and SAARC countries, before focusing on national sales. The collection is made from biodegradable material, vegetable dyes and organic cotton fabrics.

I know of two other organisations doing similar work, called NEED and SASHA. I’m sure there are many more, because every region has their own traditional handicrafts that not only need preserving, but can act as a source of income if only the right trade linkages are established.
