Revisiting the rational/emotional dichotomy

August 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

On the front page of today’s Hindustan Times (via Reuters):

A man who gets angry at work may well be admired for it, but a woman who shows anger in the workplace is liable to be seen as “out of control” and incompetent, says a new study presented on Friday.

Brescoll said the findings revealed a “difficult paradox” for professional women — while anger can serve as a powerful tool to achieve status at work, women may have to behave calmly in order to be seen as rational.

Difficult paradox indeed–can we say ‘double standard’? I guess men’s anger is seen as rational while women’s is not?

This is a lovely addition to the other heart-warming study from earlier this week that found women don’t ask for rasies for fear of negative repercussions, so they don’t get them; but their male counterparts get rewarded both monetarily and culturally (i.e. workplace culture: more respect etc) for doing so.

Not nice to wake up to on an otherwise lovely Saturday morning!
