A quest for clarity

Renting wombs in Gujarat

February 12th, 2008 · No Comments

After I had been lamenting the lack of coverage on surrogacy in India, check out my friend Prerna’s article (inspired by my post!). Unfortunately I missed the tv coverage but apparently she was part of an undercover operation, posing as a potential client!

Hundreds of women in Anand have become surrogate mothers. Hundreds more from all over India will soon join this ever flourishing trade.

But unless the government sets clear guidelines for the protection of surrogate mothers, many of these women will remain vulnerable by medical doctors and unscrupulous middlemen, who may be exploiting them for their own benefit. Until that time happens, the women of Anand and the rest of India will have to wait for their rights.
