Poo no longer taboo

The Bhonsles tend their kitchen garden which, like their indoor latrine, is being copied by neighbours.

Sorry but this story made me smile and I just have to share the joy. A government-led project to install indoor latrines is finally gaining a foothold and families are enjoying the benefits. At first it was a large hurdle convincing people to use it for things other than storage, given the age-old tendency to relieve the call of nature only out in the open and beliefs that it was unhygenic to do such a thing inside. But gradually women became convinced when diarrhea, malaria and snake bites decreased, as did occurances of molestation in the secluded areas; and they realised that toilets were actually time-saving devices!
