Where Social Media Meets Social Good

Nonprofit networking part 3?

On Saturday I attended #SMBaithak (Social Media Baithak) in Jaipur. After my experience  organizing #SocialGood Day on Sept 23rd, the discussion was slightly disappointing in that it was more general and the participants were primarily from the tourism industry, since the host was as well.

The meeting was held at the Pink City Cultural Center, and organized by Dr Mahaveer Singh Nathawat and @swagatsen, whose friend @sanjukta basu, TED fellow and renowned feminist, had just conducted the SMBaithak in Delhi. I don’t think she would’ve been too pleased to see that I was the only woman participating! (A couple ladies showed up towards the end, but they were pretty much only talking to each other in the back).

when it was over we had a chance to talk about organizing an event for climate change on 10/10/10.

Nonetheless, I was eager to share my experience as Isha Foundation‘s community manager and social communications coordinator. After the participants had trickled out, I watched  a film the PCCC had created about the deterioration of the nearby lake’s ecosystem (where Jal Mahal is). I suggested they can hold an event on 10/10/10 and they jumped at the opportunity. Too bad I’m already organizing another event and can’t be in two places at once ;)

Becky, I just realized that we didn't need Swagat to introduce us on facebook. We already know each other, you in fact hold a blogroll position on my blog for over 2 years now :) I knew you as a Gender de-constructionist. Didn't know you are into Social Media as well. I kind of knew that the discussions at the Jaipur Baithak wouldn't have the required impact since I was missing from the organizing scene and Mr. Nathawat organized things in a rush. But a start was required albeit imperfect. Let's meet soon and try to get more girls at a more well planned Baithak in Jaipur. Talk soon.
