I thought this was going to be an article on how women are empowering themselves by taking snaps of eve-teasers on their mobiles (Ã la Blank Noise Project or HollaBack) but unfortunately it’s about the increased misuse of technology for harrassment.
The police say while they sense that such crimes are on the rise, there is poor reporting of them. Even if the case is reported, the woman generally does not want the case to be registered, fearing that exposing her identity will affect the rest of her life.
Women request the police only to take steps to get rid of the offensive material.
A senior officer said the situation could be rectified only if more women felt that the offender should be prosecuted. Otherwise, the police often end up being mediators and the real deterrent — conviction — is hardly coming.
But shouldn’t the police in fact encourage women to press charges, even if the women themselves seem reluctant?
