Linking feminism and spirituality

August 12th, 2008 · No Comments

“The especial genius of women I believe to be electrical in movement, intuitive in function, spiritual in tendency.” –Margaret Fuller f(rom the Sunday TOI)

I don’t recall ever having heard of Fuller, but apparently she was the 1st Feminist in the US (her book Woman in the Nineteenth Century is considered the first major feminist work in the United States) and subsequent women’s rights advocates like Susan B. Anthony cite her as an inspiration.

As part of the Transcendentalist movement, she was in good company with Emerson and Thoreau.

Among transcendentalists’ core beliefs was an ideal spiritual state that ‘transcends’ the physical and empirical and is only realized through the individual’s intuition, rather than through the doctrines of established religions.
