Women’s e-news has a piece on Muslim women’s activism in India, particularly surrounding the case of Imrana who had been raped by her father-in-law. The village elders, following Sharia, had ruled that her marriage be dissolved. However, women’s groups such as the All India Muslim Women’s Personal Law Board (see here) took up her cause and she steadfastly pursued a secular court case which has since ruled against her father-in-law.Also by the same author, Aditi Bhaduri, see this review of Margot Badran’s book Feminism Beyond East and West.
