Santhi Soundarajan was a talented female runner whose reputation has been sullied by an allegedly ‘failed gender test’. She is now in the news for having attempted suicide.
Given the confusion and uncertainity over determining a person’s sex, the International Olympic Committee stopped gender testing in 1999. But the Olympic Council of Asia continues the practice.
Media sources do not say what exactly constituted the particular test that she failed, but it is quite disturbing that the practice has largely been discontinued, save in Asia.
