Empowerment: Not for sale

September 1st, 2007 · 1 Comment

See this commentary piece (and this also) about the neverending story of whitening cream’s offensiveness. While we can’t really expect more from a company than exploiting our weaknesses for marketing purposes, this stuff really has got to go! Add this to the list of all the other demeaning and exploitative things women face here. And whadya know, cosmetics sales as a whole are shooting up here as more women enter the corporate sphere!
But these creams aren’t just for women, but for men too (because of course only fair women fall for fair men):

SRK has been getting a lot of flak for his participation in this ad, but he doesn’t seem to mind as he’s raking in the dough.

Personally, as a ‘fair’ woman living here, I don’t feel any benefits associated with lighter skin–I get gawked and stared at for being such a rare anomaly. Of course this may be associated with the fact that I’m non-Indian, but still.

Get a pink glow with Pond’s

Ah, yes, that pesky issue of skin whitening creams is back. A Telegraph article quotes an outraged head of the All-India Democratic Women’s Association over the above recent series of Pond’s advertisements. ‘White Beauty gives yo…
