Do not destroy ‘I do not know.’

Sadhguru at TED India, Mysore

Not surprisingly, the audience gave Sadhguru a standing ovation (which is something reserved only for the best of the best at TED!). Curator and host Chris Anderson asked Sadhguru if he was concerned that due to the spectacular economic growth in India over the last 15 years, people may have less time for spiritual matters. Sadhguru replied, “No, on the contrary, the way India is made is such that, when wellbeing comes, they actually have more time for themselves. It’s only because of poverty that, in many ways, spirituality has become a dead thing. When people are struggling for bread, you can’t tell them to meditate.” “I don’t divide the world as material and spiritual; because it’s one large happening,” he added.

Sadhguru gave the broadminded audience one fundamental advice: “Do not destroy ‘I do not know.’ ‘I do not know’ is a tremendous possibility. If you destroy ‘I do not know’ with assumptions, belief systems and other things, the very possibility of knowing is finished in your life. If you destroy ‘I do not know,’ you will neither long to know nor seek to know, nor will you ever know. So, do not ever destroy ‘I do not know.’ ‘I do not know’ is the engine which powers the longing to know.”

Finally, Chris requested Sadhguru to sing. When Sadhguru chanted Jananam Sukhadham, the entire crowd went still. Many people shared later that they felt something “electric” in the air when he sang. As he went off-stage, people came rushing towards him, and his assistant soon ran out of brochures and business cards. The overwhelming response confirmed: message received, “idea worth spreading”…
