Film Friday

August 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

I have been meaning to write a post on this movie for a while, and I’ve decided to try to do a regular Film Friday feature. It’s called Le Beau Mariage–not sure if it’s at all based on a play called Un Beau Mariage but I don’t think so. Somewhat randomly, it was playing in [...]

Alone, not lonely

July 14th, 2008 · No Comments

The front page of the Sunday Times Life section, always highlighting recent social trends, featured an article entitled ‘It’s Sweeter Solo‘ on the increasing acceptability in Indian society of being on one’s own. It painted solitude as rewarding, instead of being the stereotypical domain of singletons and crazies.
The article features mainly quotes from random people, [...]

Women on the move

July 6th, 2008 · 4 Comments

My latest (and long-awaited!) post at UV:

“Yes! I also missed a lot of trains. But in those days I was a man. In fact, I’m still a man. But you are a girl. A girl alone is like an open locker.”

Gender & Trade

July 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

The recent Gender and Trade Newsletter disseminated by the Commonwealth Secretariat has two articles which are particularly interesting to me.

1. An Interview with Dr. Christa Wichterich
I had met this woman at the Women in Development Europe (WIDE) conference on ‘EU bilateral and regional free trade agreements: bringing women to the centre of the [...]
