Botched sterilisation leads to compensation

May 21st, 2008 · No Comments

A Delhi court has held the government responsible for the birth of an unwanted child in a poor household because the mother became pregnant despite undergoing sterilisation under a government-sponsored scheme at a hospital.

I’m glad to see that the government will have to take credit for this case. Their sterilisation rampage is notorious for its human rights abuses, and this is just another dimension of the tale. I can understand why they would have promoted sterilisation–as a presumably quick fix, opposed to other methods of contraception–yet obviously it is not the panacea it was expected to be.
