Acid attacks are on the increase

August 20th, 2007 · No Comments

This is so disturbing:

Police experts say acid attacks are usually crimes of passion- the ultimate weapon of control and vengeance against women.

Like in the case of a 30-year-old who was burnt by acid while she was getting into a bus in suburban Mumbai for rejecting an offer of marriage.

Acid attack as a manifestation of crime of passion not only scars victims psychologically but is also aimed at destroying their identity, which experts say can be stopped only with more stringent laws.

Acid is easily available in any grocery store. Few suspect the motives of someone carrying a bottle of acid till it is flung at an individual. Even though these attacks rank among gruesome crimes, few cases are reported.

Worse even among those that do get filed, conviction rates are still low.

”The low conviction rate makes people believe that they can get away with it,” said Kamini Jaiswal, Advocate, Supreme Court.
